The Globe + Google Developers Workshop

As a developer, I signed up for the Globe + Google Developers Workshop and decided to book  a flight from Zamboanga to Manila for a short weekend vacation and to attend the event.

Yesterday, June 20, 2009, the event was held at the UP-Ayala Technohub, Commonwealth Ave., Quezon City, and the conference room was jam-packed with developers. I arrived around 12:20pm and signed the attendance sheet. I looked for a place where I can clearly see the screen and of course a spot with a power outlet. WiFi was on. Me? Plurking and Facebooking while waiting for the event to start. Eventually, the WiFi connection went down. Lucky me I have my Globe Visibility Kit ready.

Aileen Apolo then welcomed the participants and the speakers from Globe Telecom and Google.

The speaker from Globe Labs, Blue de Venecia, started the workshop with a brief overview of what Globe Labs is all about. It’s all about giving the developers the access to their developers APIs  (SMS/MMS/Voice/Location-based Service), to let them explore the available tools and create great mobile applications, and  help developers monetize their apps.

Patrick Chanezon, from Google, talked about a number of interesting APIs  which includes the following:

  1. Open Social API – allows you to create a social networking applications.
  2. O3D API – helps create rich and interactive web contents in 3D format.
  3. GeoLocation API – giving developers the ability to retrieve user’s location.

He also introduced the new Google Web Elements and showed a lot of demos of the APIs.

Another speaker from Globe Labs, Sherwin Sowy, discussed about the Globe’s SMS/MMS and Voice Developer API. He showed a sample mashup application in sending an SMS note to Google Calendar to set an appointment and sending free SMS via the iGoogle Gadget they developed.

Yet another guy from Globe Labs, Greg, gave a short talk and demo about the Globe Labs Location-Based Service (LBS) API which basically serves the GPS service.

Before the session ended, questions were entertained by the speakers. I am looking forward in the coming days to use and explore all these APIs. And of course, earn from it, hopefully. I will just keep you posted.
