DevCon Philippines Summit: DevOpsDays Manila 2011
I attended the DevCon Cebu GeekUp last October 27, 2011 held at Kul Kitchen (The Strip Branch). During the geekup, we brainstormed and shared ideas on how to improve the community in term of its goals and future activities. At one point, before ending the session, someone reminded us about the raffle contest for the most anticipated event of the year by DevCon Philippines, it is the DevOpsDays Manila 2011. When I went back to the office after the geekup, I submitted my entry for the contest and was just trying my luck. It was actually the last day for submission. Days later, and guest what? I received a call from Ms. Jo Eduardo, one of the officers from DevCon Ph, informing me that I won the round-trip airfare and hotel accommodation to attend the DevCon Philippines Summit – DevOpsDays Manila 2011! Hooray!
Anyway, going to the DevOpsDays Manila 2011… With three other lucky winners (which DevCon labelled us as Scholars) flew to Manila last December 2, 2011 to attend the Summit which was held at Makati Palace Hotel (which where we also stayed for a day).

I was so excited for this event as this is the first in South East Asia; satisfied and glad I took the opportunity to participate. The event basically aims to bring the development and operations in one venue and share ideas on how to collaborate.
It was a jam-packed event. Lots of developers and operations personnel from different companies attended, around 200 to be exact. Also participants from the academe (instructors and students) took the opportunity to explore and learn about DevOpsDays.
The event started with the Opening Remarks by Mr. Winston Damarillo, DeCon Philippines Founder and followed by the Keynote speech by Mr. Lee Thompson, one of the founders of DevOpsDays which he talked about concepts of DevOpsDays and Data Manufacturing Systems. DevCon Game Development Camp
Last September 2-3, 2011, I attended the DevCon Game Development Camp here in Cebu City. It was a 2-day geeky event brought to us by PhilDev, IBM, Morphlabs, Exist, and IGDA Manila. It was held at TechBar, IT Park wherein 20+ attended the bootcamp.
I tried creating a game years ago but wasn’t able to give enough time to continue with it. And so I attended this event to learn more and try again game programming and hopefully find time to play around in this field. Also learned a new API called SFML (Simple and Fast Multimedia Library) which is an open source tool for multimedia which game programming needs.

DevCon Philippines Celebrated its First Year Anniversary in Cebu City
A year ago, June 25, 2009, a number of developers gathered together in an event with a vision of bringing together people from the IT industry and academe, forming a community. It was a jam-packed event at the venue at Techbar, IT Park, Cebu City. Although I was not there that time, participants shared experiences about the event with enthusiasm. The event is so-called DevCon (Developers Connect) Philippines, with its famous tag line – “Sync. Support. Succeed.”
Yesterday, June 25, 2010, DevCon Philippines celebrated its first year anniversary with a blast. Developers from the IT industry and academe across the Philippines gathered again in Cebu City, not anymore in Techbar but at Casino Español, Cebu City, with ample space for the participants. Initially, Mr. Winston Damarillo, founder of DevCon, gave an overview about DevCon and its activities, like the recent DevCon Geekup wherein fellow IT professionals and from academe shared their ideas on how to bridge the gap between the industry and academe. He also started an informal discussion among participants by asking questions. They sponsors gave aways from freebies to those who participated.
Just right after the opening remarks of Mr. Damarillo, Mr. Lope Doromal of IBM gave the keynote with the topic about having a “Smarter Planet.” He stressed out the three I’s – Instrumented, Interconnected, and Intelligent – in order to have a smarter community. Read more…
