If you are planning to put up a website for your online presence, maybe for a portfolio site, a blog, or for an e-commerce site, you need to understand the technicalities behind how a website works. This post discusses on how to set up a website with your own domain name and web hosting. But if you’re running out of budget, you can opt to register with some free hosting and subdomains sites like Google Pages, Blogspot, WordPress, etc.
Now, a website needs to have a domain name and web hosting. Domain name is a user-friendly name that you type on your browser address field. It is what is mapped to your web hosting server IP address. A domain name can be of top-level domain name which include .com, .net, and .org (the generic domain names). For country-level domain name, you can have .ph, .us, .ae, etc. Top-level domain name (TLD) are cheaper compared to country-level domain name (ccTLD). For a year registration, TLD costs around $10-$15 while ccTLD costs around $30+. You can buy domain name at a domain name registrars such as GoDaddy.com and Network Solutions. GeoCities is shutting down and for that I got 2 years free DreamHost hosting account and a domain name!
When I started with web designing/developing way back year 2000, I signed up for a GeoCities account to practice the new craft I am trying out. Now, I may say that I am a full-fledged web developer; already got some web developing jobs, yet still learning to keep me updated with the trends in creating a website and applications.
Well, as the title reads – GeoCities is shutting down, and it will be later this year according to their website advisory. I already learned this news over Plurk few weeks ago. Some of my Plurk friends keeps sharing about the news and what more I was so excited to know about is if it is true that they got 2 years free DreamHost account with unlimited space and bandwidth and a year domain name. Yes! That is true, all that for free. It would cost you around $220 (more or less) to have that in a regular purchase.
Well, without further hesitation, I visited the blog post about that from DreamHost and also the entry of Jehzlau. It was true then. So, I visited my GeoCities account and saw the homepage saying…
