If you are planning to put up a website for your online presence, maybe for a portfolio site, a blog, or for an e-commerce site, you need to understand the technicalities behind how a website works. This post discusses on how to set up a website with your own domain name and web hosting. But if you’re running out of budget, you can opt to register with some free hosting and subdomains sites like Google Pages, Blogspot, WordPress, etc.
Now, a website needs to have a domain name and web hosting. Domain name is a user-friendly name that you type on your browser address field. It is what is mapped to your web hosting server IP address. A domain name can be of top-level domain name which include .com, .net, and .org (the generic domain names). For country-level domain name, you can have .ph, .us, .ae, etc. Top-level domain name (TLD) are cheaper compared to country-level domain name (ccTLD). It is more appropriate if you will use names that are related to the contents of your website or business name. To acquire your desired domain name, you have to do domain registration with some domain registrars.
Domain names are cheap, it may range from $7-$15 for the top level domain name extensions (.com, .org, .net). Country domains are also offered with some domain registrar but of different pricing. Domain registration is easy and you can pay it using Credit/Debit cards, Paypal, Western Union or other payment modes that is offered by the domain registrars.
Just a note, be sure that your domain name registrar is ICANN Accredited (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number) when you are doing a domain registration.
